Description

Crafted in Iga, Japan, this rice bowl embodies the spirit of earthenware—bringing the warmth of the earth to the table. Made by a single artisan at Kobo Kiln for Azmaya, each piece is shaped on the wheel and finished by hand, from clay preparation to glazing. The glazes use only natural materials sourced in Iga, such as ash and feldspar, giving the bowls their organic, earthy tones.

Though simple in form, the bowls reveal endless variety. Gentle curves, subtle glaze shifts, and the way they harmonize with food or other tableware create new expressions each time they’re used. The tactile quality is unmistakably Iga—sturdy, grounding, yet lighter in hand than it looks. The tall, thick foot is left unglazed, showcasing the raw clay’s natural texture. Versatile in use, these bowls suit rice, soup, cereal, or even whisking matcha.

Over time, small marks, color changes, and stains become part of the bowl’s unique story. In Japan, this is cherished as a sign of an object that has been lovingly cared for and made one’s own.  Read more about 'Nurturing Ceramics'

Note: Each piece is handmade and will vary in expression.

Care

Iga clay is naturally coarse. To prevent odor or seepage, please perform a seasoning process (medome) before use.

You can find the ‘When you first bring new ceramicware… (Medome)’ instructions on our How to Care for Ceramics page.

Tannins in tea may react with the iron in the clay, creating patterns. Wetting the bowl with water before use can help reduce this.

Avoid leaving salty liquids in the bowl for long periods, as they may absorb and leave odors.

To prevent mold, wash thoroughly after use and allow to dry completely before storing.
