Description

Hand-carved in Matsumoto, Japan by Okubo House Mokkosha, this walnut serving spoon is shaped through a process of careful repetition. Okubo creates multiple prototypes, uses them in his own kitchen, gathers feedback from friends, and returns to the blade—refining the form again and again until it feels right.

Made from Japanese walnut, the spoon highlights the natural beauty of the wood through simple, thoughtful craftsmanship. Its fan-shaped form widens toward the tip, while a deep, sculpted curve creates a generous bowl that scoops far more than its slender appearance suggests. Serving is smooth and satisfying, with a shape that feels intuitive from the first use.

The design is inspired by jūnō, a traditional Japanese household tool once used to scoop charcoal and ash. Known for its ability to lift and carry with ease, the jūnō’s practical form has been reimagined here as a serving spoon that feels sturdy, balanced, and reliable. The straight, uncluttered tip and comfortable thickness are key to how easily it scoops and transfers food.

From stew, mashed potatoes, and meatballs to morning granola, oatmeal, and desserts like cobbler or ice cream, this spoon handles both savory and sweet with ease. It’s equally suited for sharing dishes at the table or serving yourself a quiet breakfast.

Like all of Okubo’s work, the spoon is finished entirely with a blade—never sandpaper. This traditional approach avoids fine surface scratches, helping resist moisture and keeping the wood smooth and clean over time. With use, the walnut develops a soft sheen and deeper character, becoming more beautiful the longer it’s part of your kitchen.

Lightweight yet sturdy, gentle on cookware, and deeply satisfying to use, this serving spoon is made to settle into daily life—an everyday companion that quietly earns its place at the table.

Okubo House Mokkosha

Okubo House Mokkosha creates wooden kitchen tools and cutlery that blend time-honored techniques with a fresh, intuitive sense of use. Founder Kotaro Okubo hand-carves each piece in his studio in Matsumoto, shaping the wood with a small plane rather than sanding — an old method that keeps the surface smooth for years. His unique approach, rooted in his background in Kyoto crafting traditional wooden doors and architectural fittings, results in utensils that feel remarkably natural in the hand. These are tools meant to be used every day and enjoyed for a long, long time.
