Description

Hand-carved in Matsumoto, Japan by Okubo House Mokkosha, this soup spoon is shaped for a gentle, comforting eating experience. The surface is finished entirely with a plane, leaving it smooth to the touch, light in the hand, and free of the fine scratches that sanding can create.

A small raised ridge at the end of the handle keeps the spoon from slipping into your bowl — a thoughtful detail that makes everyday use surprisingly pleasant. You’ll also notice the clean plane marks running from the tip through the handle, a quiet sign of Okubo-san’s steady, exacting handwork.

Compared to the Maple Wood Spoon from the same maker, this soup spoon has a slightly shorter but deeper bowl, allowing you to scoop a generous amount of broth or light soups. The rim is carved thin so it feels soft against the lips, and with just a small tilt, the soup flows smoothly into the mouth. It’s a subtle difference, but once you use it, it becomes hard to go back to a standard spoon.

Finished with a thin layer of fuki-urushi, the spoon has a soft sheen and a pleasant, velvety feel — a natural lacquer that deepens in tone with use while offering quiet durability and antibacterial qualities. It’s gentle on ceramics, light to hold, and designed to bring a moment of calm to everyday meals.

Please note that these pieces are made from natural wood, so each one has its own character. The grain, color, and texture will vary. Because every spatula is handcrafted, slight variations in size and shape will occur. These small differences are part of the charm of tools made by hand. Enjoy these natural differences as the individuality of the wood and the beauty of a one-of-a-kind piece.

Artisan

Okubo House Mokkosha

Okubo House Mokkosha creates wooden kitchen tools and cutlery that blend time-honored techniques with a fresh, intuitive sense of use. Founder Kotaro Okubo hand-carves each piece in his studio in Matsumoto, shaping the wood with a small plane rather than sanding — an old method that keeps the surface smooth for years. His unique approach, rooted in his background in Kyoto crafting traditional wooden doors and architectural fittings, results in utensils that feel remarkably natural in the hand. These are tools meant to be used every day and enjoyed for a long, long time.
