Description

Hand-carved in Matsumoto, Japan by Okubo House Mokkosha, this maple spoon is designed to bring an unusually gentle, comfortable feeling to everyday eating. The bowl is carved intentionally shallow and thin, allowing food to move off the spoon easily without needing to tilt or use extra pressure. Pair that with a slender, straight handle, and the whole motion of eating feels calm and natural.

Each spoon is shaped individually with a small plane rather than sandpaper, leaving the surface smooth and free of the tiny scratches that can catch on the lips or hold moisture. The thin, refined edge also makes the spoon surprisingly capable for small tasks—cutting into the crispy edges of a fried egg, breaking into the top of baked dishes, or scooping firmer desserts without clattering against your bowl.

A fuki-urushi finish completes the piece with a soft, velvety touch and quiet durability. The natural lacquer is applied in very thin layers, creating a gentle sheen that deepens with use and offering natural antibacterial properties. Because the spoon is wooden and light, it doesn’t heat up while eating and is gentle on your ceramics.

Shaped through many rounds of trial, testing, and adjustment, this spoon reflects Okubo-san’s thoughtful approach: a focus on how a utensil feels in the hand and in the mouth. It’s a simple piece, but one that quietly removes the small frictions we often accept when eating with a standard spoon.

Over time, the maple will deepen in tone and take on a soft luster, becoming a familiar part of your daily meals.

Please note that these pieces are made from natural wood, so each one has its own character. The grain, color, and texture will vary. Because every spatula is handcrafted, slight variations in size and shape will occur. These small differences are part of the charm of tools made by hand. Enjoy these natural differences as the individuality of the wood and the beauty of a one-of-a-kind piece.

Okubo House Mokkosha

Okubo House Mokkosha creates wooden kitchen tools and cutlery that blend time-honored techniques with a fresh, intuitive sense of use. Founder Kotaro Okubo hand-carves each piece in his studio in Matsumoto, shaping the wood with a small plane rather than sanding — an old method that keeps the surface smooth for years. His unique approach, rooted in his background in Kyoto crafting traditional wooden doors and architectural fittings, results in utensils that feel remarkably natural in the hand. These are tools meant to be used every day and enjoyed for a long, long time.
