Description

Handcrafted in Matsumoto, Japan by Okubo House Mokkosha, this chestnut cooking spoon is designed to do what other tools often can’t. Slimmer than a silicone spatula and longer than a standard spoon, it moves lightly through the in-between tasks of everyday cooking.

The narrow, compact tip slips easily into tight spaces between ingredients and pan — perfect for sautéing a small amount of onions in a saucepan, turning meatballs one by one, or flipping pancakes with control. Its gently curved edge follows the sides of bowls and pans, making it easy to scrape, mash, and mix. Whether you’re crushing potatoes in a small bowl and then folding them into a salad, or stirring a dish that’s prone to breaking apart, the soft touch of wood keeps ingredients intact.

This thoughtful balance comes from repeated testing and refinement. Okubo shaped and reshaped the form through use in his own kitchen, adjusting until it felt just right. The choice of chestnut wood, a relatively lightweight species, adds to that ease — responsive and comfortable for precise movements and quick turns.

Each spoon is finished entirely with a hand plane, not sandpaper. This traditional technique leaves a smooth, pleasing surface with subtle traces of the blade along the curves and edges. Without fine sanding scratches, the wood resists fuzzing and is easier to keep clean over time.

Not quite a spoon, not quite a spatula, and not a turner — it’s a quietly versatile tool that handles the space in between. With its comfortable feel and everyday usefulness, it’s the kind of utensil you’ll want to keep within easy reach, right by the stove.

Please note that these pieces are made from natural wood, so each one has its own character. The grain, color, and texture will vary. Because every spatula is handcrafted, slight variations in size and shape will occur. These small differences are part of the charm of tools made by hand. Enjoy these natural differences as the individuality of the wood and the beauty of a one-of-a-kind piece.

Artisan

Okubo House Mokkosha

Okubo House Mokkosha creates wooden kitchen tools and cutlery that blend time-honored techniques with a fresh, intuitive sense of use. Founder Kotaro Okubo hand-carves each piece in his studio in Matsumoto, shaping the wood with a small plane rather than sanding — an old method that keeps the surface smooth for years. His unique approach, rooted in his background in Kyoto crafting traditional wooden doors and architectural fittings, results in utensils that feel remarkably natural in the hand. These are tools meant to be used every day and enjoyed for a long, long time.
