My Ceramic Dilemma

My Ceramic Dilemma

Are you a fellow ceramic lover? I sure am. Beautiful plates make the food we cook even more special, and the everyday drink a bit more enjoyable. I adore handmade ceramics, whether crafted by well-known artists or humble artisans, but they often need a bit more TLC—and that’s where my dilemma comes in.

As a busy mom, I’d love to toss all my dishes into my trusty dishwasher. But the ceramics I truly love? They’re not so dishwasher-friendly. So, I’ve been on a quest to find ceramics that I can adore and that are dishwasher safe. So far, Heath Ceramics from San Francisco has been a favorite, but I’m searching for Japanese-made options. The hunt is still on!

Yes, you see me sneaking some earthenware in there. After using them for a while, I regularly take the risk with some pieces—but others, I still wash by hand...

While my journey continues, I can’t resist keeping beautiful earthenware on my table, even if they need a little extra care. I’ve been a longtime admirer of Yoshihiro Nanao’s work, following his ceramics journey on Instagram for quite a while. And guess what? He discovered okappa and reached out to share that he resonated with the store’s concept—ahhh!!

This led to a wonderful opportunity to visit his atelier in Japan, where I got to know him and see firsthand the incredible work that goes into his beautiful ceramics. Pieces like his are worth every bit of the extra love and care they require.

Check out Yoshihiro Nanao’s ceramics on our site, and stay tuned as I continue my hunt for those elusive dishwasher-safe pieces!
