A Warm Thank You from Our First Furoshiki Workshop

A Warm Thank You from Our First Furoshiki Workshop

Last Sunday, I had the joy of sharing okappa’s first-ever furoshiki workshop: the Holiday Furoshiki Wrapping Workshop at Fumi. I had been both excited and a little nervous leading up to it — preparing materials, brushing up on my furoshiki skills, imagining how the room might feel once everyone gathered. But thanks to the participants and Fumi’s warm hospitality, the evening unfolded into something even more special than I had hoped.

From the moment people arrived, the room felt cozy and calm — the perfect setting to slow down and enjoy the quiet joy of wrapping. We spent the evening tying, folding, chatting, and learning a handful of furoshiki techniques together.

Furoshiki is such a simple tool — just a square of cloth — yet it holds so much possibility. A gift wrap, a carry-all, a bottle wrap, a reusable daily helper. Watching everyone try the techniques, discover new ways to wrap, and then see their faces light up when a simple fold transformed into something beautiful… it reminded me why I love furoshiki so much. I hope each person left with not just practical skills, but a renewed sense of how joyful and intentional wrapping can be.

I’m deeply grateful to everyone who came — for your kindness, curiosity, and willingness to try something new alongside me. And to Mia at Fumi for being the most generous host: welcoming us into their space, creating the coziest atmosphere, and continuing to bring such meaningful events to the community.

A selection of the wraps we practiced that evening can be found on the How to Furoshiki page, a growing collection of techniques for everyday use.

Fumi has even more exciting workshops and events coming up, starting with the sashiko class with Mai Ide this Sunday (already sold out). More live performances, workshops, and tasty pops will be announced soon — definitely keep an eye on them.

Thank you again to everyone who made this milestone so memorable.
Here’s to many more folds and ties ahead!

And if this sparked a little curiosity about furoshiki, our collection is gathered here.
